What kind of media institution would want to distribute your film?
I think the kind of media institution that would want to distribute our film would be an independent British film company on a small scale, rather than a huge film studio. The reason for this being that our film is something that has also been filmed on a small scale, so it wouldn’t capture the interest of a large studio to begin with. We also didn’t have a large budget with millions of pounds to spend which films that are shot on a much larger scale have, there also wouldn’t be a lot for them to market as they would be taking a risk investing their time into a film no one has heard of whatsoever. The distribution company also would have to decide how many copies of the film to create, for a large American studio, because they would probably produce the film in larger quantities, they would not know whether or not they should because it could make them a substantial loss in earnings, whereas with a smaller independent company, they will only produce a few copies and their budget would usually be a lot more reasonable for the type of film.

There three independent film distributors who I think would consider distributing our film are Warp Films, Soda Pictures and Metrodome. All of these are independent British film distributors. The reason for choosing these distributors is because they are relatively small distributors of who would accept a film like ours. Starting with Warp Films, I think this studio would distribute our film as it is the kind of film they usually distribute, one example is “Dead Man’s Shoes”, which they filmed in only 22 days on a tight budget, yet it was nominated for various film awards. They also have experience of making a successful film that doesn’t stretch the budget too far, I think because this film is also quite similar to ours in the fact that it follows a group of friends and contains a lot of humour, so they would not feel like they were jumping into something completely new and different, which I think would help not only with the actual distribution of our film, but also things such as marketing.
Soda Pictures is another distributor which I took into consideration as they have distributed films that are on smaller budgets but not huge budgets meant for box office success. I think this would probably be the most ideal studio because they have distributed quite a lot of films and had reasonable success with many of them, the only downside I could see to distributing through Soda Pictures is that they haven’t created many comedies or ROMCOMS so they may not feel as confident distributing a film that they aren’t used to.
The final distributor I looked at was Metrodome, a small London based independent film distributor with experience in both Hollywood films but also smaller scale indie style productions. I think this would help because the company have experience distributing small and large films.
