Evaluation Q2

How does your opening sequence represent particular social groups?

The key characters in our film are Danny and Omar, who are the two best friends which the film is based around. We tried to represent the two characters differently by having them react differently to different situations. Starting with Omar, we tried to represent him as a student who isn’t the brightest and hates going to school (hence him bunking the lesson). An example of this is the soundtrack we used in the background; we used a slow “comedic” style tune to get across to the audience that Omar wasn’t the brightest of people. He also lacks common sense as he actually thinks that he and Danny will be best friends for the rest of their life, when realistically, it’s probably not going to happen. Danny represents the kind of student who is influenced by other people, as seen in this sequence, Omar is influencing Danny to miss his classes and do stupid things with him, and because they are such close friends, Danny feels as if he would be causing a rift in their friendship by not being with Omar. I think that Omar is a lot like Ben from the film “Knocked Up” as they both have quite an irresponsible nature to them, for a start, Omar hates school and misses a lot of his lessons, and Ben from Knocked Up, just parties and gets high, so they are very alike in that sense. I think Danny is a lot like Marisa from the film “Maid in Manhattan”, as he puts a lot of effort into his football, just like Marisa does to her work at the hotel, however he gets influenced to do things by his friend Omar that he probably shouldn’t, like when he goes crazy with him which is shown in the opening sequence, this is very similar to Marisa who tried on one of the guests clothes because her friends influenced her. The social groups we are trying to represent are regular students who have a best friend and tend do a lot of things together with this person. The point that we are trying to get across is that these friends will do anything together. The social group being represented here can easily relate to this if they have a best friend with whom they do a lot of things together.
